Nook Color….. Nootered

So I recently got the nook, mainly to use as a budget android tablet as it was only a matter of time it was going to be rooted or nootered. There have already been a few apps that came out that solves the problem with the nook only having one home button and the volume buttons. It is possible to remap the buttons, like the vol up and down to menu and back. But another way is to have an app overlay the the basic buttons on the screen when the home/n is pressed.

With this limitation solved the nook is an awesome android tablet. I have yet to read any books on it yet but I have been having too much fun making it do everything else.

For those that have a nook color I would highly recommend rooting your nook. It is really simple to achieve this, all you need to do is download 2 things, an image file and an image write.
You write the files to a microSD card and stick it in your nook and that is all about there is to do.

Once everything is finished all you need to do is format the microSD card in your nook or else your microSD card will have a bunch of weird partitions. Restore all the files you may have had on the microSD card and your done.

Froyo(Android 2.2) on HTC Hero(CDMA)

So I dumped CyanogenMod6(CM6) for Nonsense asopMod and it works awesome, granted there isn't any flash support on the rom the speed of the rom is just fantastic. Being able to answer calls without the sense lag, angry birds plays with virtually no lag.

So yes I am on a new rom again!! But this time it is a little different this time it is my own rom. Yes... I am working on my own rom, this started as a personal rom for me and my girlfriend. Mainly for her so she has a stable rom that has all the parts working with no major problems. But as I was building it I started building it for me as well.

This is mainly till the AOSP rom CM6 is final, and to see if MMS will work for it on my carrier. If not I may just stick with my own rom. Currently it is a simple rom built mainly with Android Kitchen, but I have been starting to mod a few system apk files to get it working more to my liking. One is the no end call mod so you don't hang up with your cheek, this mod was originally made by JsChiSurf but when I flashed his apk to my phone my vm notification disappeared so I came to the conclusion that I would need to redo all the sprint rom mods I want specifically for non-sprint roms. Switched roms again now on Drachdroid

Well I just switched to the Drachdroid rom since I wasn't using really much of anything that ZenExp offered since I grew tired of the sense UI. So far the only problem I am having with the Drachdroid rom is that I am losing my mobile network when the phone sleeps. Not sure why I have to put the phone in airplane mode and back to normal to make it work again. Just seems weird to me, I didn't have this problem on ZenExp so maybe it is some setting on Drachdroid that is causing it. Still trying to figure it out but haven't been able to do much yet.

2.1 is here and it sucks?

So 2.1 was released for regional carriers in Alaska, and ever since the update I have had nothing by connection problems. Granted I am not running the official 2.1 update but since that day it has been terrible. My girlfriend however does have the update and the connection is still terrible. So I am wondering if they messed up the setting on their side because we are both having problems.

ZenExp has a minor issue….

Well like I stated before I switch to the ZenExp Rom, and the rom is pretty awesome. I don't have any real complaints other then my gmail stopped syncing. This was a known issue before I installed it but I thought I got lucky because it was working for a few days. Now it just stopped which is strange.

While I may stick with ZenExp I may try out the Drachdroid rom. It doesn't have HTC Sense but I can live with it. The only thing I will miss about the  Sense is the music controls on the lock screen. I am not sure when I will do the wipe as I ma

Switched Rom Again!

Well I recently updated to DamageControl 2.09.1 and with the hands free and data voice pop-ups and errors, and not getting any voicemail notifications because I am not on sprint. I figured I would try out a different rom. I ended up using ZenExp just for kicks as the user interface is from the mytouch 3g from tmobile. It has all the tmobile branding taken out and it runs pretty good. I like being able to change between the different themes although there isn't too many choices. I also like the recent apps in the notification pulldown. And best of all I got my voicemail notification back. I may use this for awhile then give the bittersweet rom a try once 2.0 comes out and seems to be working good.

So far I am glad that I have rooted my phone and didn't wait until my carrier released 2.1. Which is suppose to be happening at the end of the month(June). But they have been saying that line since April.

Finally a weekend….. and a rooted hero!

So I ended up having to work a 10 day stretch for my first 2 weeks back at work.. it sucked but man the weekend feels great!!!

I was also able to root my hero finally, took me a while to root it due to problems I ran into but it all worked out in the end.
It makes me wish I had a hero from sprint or somewhere else as it would have been easier to root.

I will most likely start to experiment with the other roms since now that I am getting used to everything!

Allergies???

Well it seems like I developed allergies... My eyes have been itchy/burning, nose is stuffed or running, and I have been sneezing as well. So now I have been taking Benadryl it has been working okay so far but I still hee

Swype on my hero

So I have had my hero for awhile now and all I can say is that it rocks. I never was a big fan of the iphone but the 4.0 update looks pretty interesting. This coming update might put even more pressure on the android platform. But the whole reason for this post is to test the swype input method. All I can say is that this is awesome makes typing way faster. Takes a little time to get use to it but it feels pretty natural. So in conclusion swype plus hero is awesome. Now all I need is the 2.1 update for the android platform and I will be happy.

Skinit vs Decalgirl

Well I recently bought 2 skins/stickers. A laptop skin for my netbook  from Decalgirl and a cellphone skin for my HTC Hero from skinit. Both skins look really good, but I favor the quality of decalgirl over skinit.

Now I got the laptop skin for my netbook because my netbook was just too red for me. I had to pick a custom size to shrink the artwork which was an extra $5 and I also picked the Matte/Satin Coating which was an additional $5, so it was $29.99 before shipping. Now the matte finish is excellent it feels good there is no fingerprints. Now I had to trim the sticker to fit my netbook, I also wanted it to wrap the lid completely.

Now I got the skin for my HTC Hero from skinit just to see the quality of their product and they also have neat designs. The sticker sheet they print on is by 3M. It has a gloss finish like your average sticker. I did not have to cut the sticker as it was pre-cut to fit the buttons and screen of the Hero. The quality of the sticker is good, but it seems a little thick to be using it on a device like a phone that covers the buttons.

It seems a little unfair to compare the two stickers as it is for 2 completely different devices, but

Borderlands

Well I bought Borderlands and the game is well..... AWESOME!!!! Its like they got fallout3 and made it 1st person only, added a "Bazillion" Guns, vehicles, and made the co-op seamless.  Now for the wish they had part.... Customizable Characters(not just color parts), Vehicles that don't get stuck so easily, an easier way to compare guns while in shops.

I have been playing co-op with my girlfriend and its been going good.. I have also been playing solo on a different character which is behind my co-op character so I am always playing catchup with it... Playing co-op is a litter easier than playing solo so you have someone to draw the enemy fire away from you or you have someone to pick you up when you go down. I haven't done any 4 player co-op but I am sure that would be a blast..

After playing this game I hope fable3 will have the co-op set up similar to this where you can go to any point on the map until someone zones to the next map. As the co-op for fable2 was horrid.

So if your thinking of getting Borderlands you should ask your self this.
Do I like FPS games?
Do I like doing quests in game like fallout3 and mmorpgs?
If you answered yes to both questions then the game is for you... If you answered no to both then you prob wont like it too much and if your answer was split then its a toss up because if you can't play FPS games because you get motion sickness or if you just suck then you will have a hard time.. and if you hate doing quests/favors for people then you will hate doing it for this game too.

Also since the game is pretty questy from what I have played so far you may get a little side tracked from the main story like in fallout3 for those that played it.

DJ Hero

Well I thought about it for a while listening to most of the tracks and watching a lot of gameplay videos and I finally decided to add another plastic instrument to my collection. Currently I have a GH3 guitar, RB1 guitar/drum/mic, and Rb2 guitar/drum(with cymbals)/mic. The game is actually really good most of the mixes are great some are a bit on the annoying side... like jackson 5 vs third eye blind. Now I wouldn't say playing this game will turn you into a DJ nor will it help you DJ better. This is just a game... just like how playing plastic guitar wont let you shred like [insert favorite guitarist here]. I currently can only play it up to hard but I get a lot of misses. I had to stop playing because I got complaints from my girlfriend that she keeps getting songs stuck in her head. Considering these are mixes you can't really sing along to them unless you A: either have the game or B: have the soundtrack. So I decided to take a break from it I was able to clear all the songs on medium on two days(which shows how much I was playing it when I bought it).

Now the controller is well built the platter feels smooth the crossfader kind of feels like something off of a cheap radio shack mixer that I used to own. The "hidden" control panel is great, although I would of had the headset jack on the front side of slider portion of the controller, this way the cords would be out of the way. I do love the fact that you can change the controller up completely for left's and the fact that you can move the buttons to either side of the platter. One thing I am wondering is if they will ever make the game where you had two platters one for the blue and one of the green stream to give you a more realistic DJ experience.

Now if your a fan of rhythm/music games and like listening to mixes then this is a must have game. You may want to actually try the game out at your local game/electronics store or at a friends house. I have friends that love the game but just can't handle the crossfader, and they end up just completely screwing up. Now if you have a friend that is fairly good at the game(can handle hard) you can get about 250 points by playing the tutorials, and 2 setlists(on hard). The first setlist would be the one right after the tutorial and the second would be the Grandmaster Flash set(if you can unlock it that fast you may have to play another just to get more stars). You will also need to create a dj/guitar setlist with one song in order to get the 2 guitar achievements. Also make sure you have a mic connected not a headset and have someone talk into it while your playing.

Wii-K47: Wii Light Gun Attachment

Well looking for a light gun and debating on which one to get I ran into  the Wii-K47 by Penguin United. From the looks of it the Wii-K47 seems to have a pretty good build quality. One of the main features of the Wii-K47 is the dual trigger one for A and one for B. This was a feature that was suppose to be on the Pelican Dual Shot, but I don't think that accessory every made it to market.

This is my first "Zapper" accessory that I have purchased. So I can't really compare it to the Official Zapper or any of the other ones.

The Wii-K47 has two parts, the front which holds the Wiimote and the back that holds the Nunchuck+Wires/Strap. Once the Wii-K47 is put together and the wires are all tucked away it looks pretty slick. The front grip is very square and seems a little small. So if depending on the size of your hand it can be uncomfortable. The rear grip is virtually the same as holding the nunchuck, although it may be a little cramped if you have large fingers. Both front and back pieces hold the controller fairly securely, you don't hear any rattling or have to worry about the controller flying out.

The front trigger layout is a bit weird, for some reason the top trigger pushes the A button and the bottom trigger pulls on the B. As far as pulling on the triggers and seeing the wiimote light up they seem pretty responsive. Both triggers have springs so if they feel mushy you can just find stiffer springs that fit. One thing I am worried about is the way the Wii-K47 pushes the A button. The A button is pressed by a piece of clear plastic that slides over the button, So eventually one of them will get worn out if not both of them.

The Wii-K47 does not have a sight on the front portion, so if your using just the front to play House of the Dead or something you might as well shoot from the hip. The back piece does have a sight but its pretty useless.

Sadly I don't currently have a game to use the Wii-K47 with, its on the way(NPPL 2009). As of now I would recommend the Wii-K47 to anyone looking for a zapper accessory as this is the only that is in the market that allows you to press the A button. Although the trigger positions are reversed. I am sure with some modification that could possibly be fixed.

I finally got my game, and the game with the Wii-K47 is pretty good. It takes a bit to get used to it but for the most part its like playing lazy paintball no screaming, no running, no pain plus you get to wipe lol. So I would really recommend the Wii-K47, I got the Wii-K47 on ebay for about $15 shipped so it was a pretty good buy

Wii!!!

Well I finally got one. Thanks to MyCokeRewards. I won a 2008 sweepstakes for the Nintendo Wii back in April. After waiting 6-8 weeks I finally got it so we got another Wiimote, got our internet fixed(it was broken when we got back in), rented DragonQuest: Swords, Okami, and Cooking Mama. So far the games are pretty fun. Not too sure about cooking mama I like the DS version better.

GTA IV

YAY!!!! I got GTA IV...... played it for about 3 hours now.. and its pretty good.. needs some more cars without alarms though... but so far its pretty impressive..

RockBand & Guitar Hero III

Well we ended up getting RockBand.. I started playing the drums on in.. Which is kinda kicking my ass when it comes to playing on Hard.. But because I have been playing RockBand and made the switch back to Guitar Hero III I was able to play through hard a lot easier, although now I am stuck in the Kajiu Megadome not being able to get past 60% on any of the songs..

Army of Two & Condemned 2

Well I got both of those games.. and I ended up beating them... lol
Condemned 2 I had to start over once since my file save for corrupted...

I have yet to beat Army of Two with an AI but I have beat it with my gf on professional...

Currently im just playing Devil May Cry 4... Rented it from GameFly.. Woot for GameFly!!!

Well Army of Two is coming in a few days... thinking of pre-ordering it for the extra weaps... but not sure if I will be able to get to the store to do so...

There seems to be mixed previews of the game so far.. some people are calling the game a flop due to EA's rep lately... but others are claiming it to be an excellent game... There are a few people that already have copies of the game... They say the game is pretty good so far...

I just can't wait to see how the co-op is integrated into the game.. Wondering if it would be more extensive then the gears co-op or just more of a sidestep to what they had...

Enchanted Arms & Viva lost…..

Well I lost my save files for Enchanted Arms and Viva Piñata... I accidentally deleted my saves with my profile... instead of just deleting my profile by its self... So thats two games I have to start over from...

The 360 Is Back!

Well my 360 has came back from service.. and everything seems to be working fine on it now... Still need to mess with all the usb ports to make sure there isn't anything funky about it...

Over a Week and its still here…..

Well is been over a week since I posted about my 360.... Sadly its still here.. In the same place... When I originally got the box to ship the 360 out in there was no shipping label in it.. so I called them.. they told me a manager has to call me back, So I waited for the call.. took 3 days finally got a call telling me that they would send one out and also give me a call again on wed(4 days later)... Haven't got the label yet but I did get a call but I couldn't understand what they were saying in the message...... So I called them again, Now they tell me that they don't send out just the shipping label and that they need to send me a new box.. So now I must wait for a new box in order to send my 360 out.. I prob wont be getting this new box till after x-mas so most of my presents will just sit there till A. I get my 360 back... B. I buy the arcade edition 360....

Here are a few things you might need before starting.
A certificate so you can sign apps, you can get a certificate from OPDA.
You can get a sis signing tool from here.
Once you get your certificate and the signing tool you can either sign all the unsigned apps manually or download HelloOX2.
Please note you can skip getting the certificate and the signing tool and just get HelloOX2 if you pay them $5 to sign the app for you.
You will need to sign HelloOX2 before you install it unless they have signed it for you.
Once you install HelloOX2 you will be able to install unsigned apps to your phone.

My First Netbook

Well I finally got a netbook. It was an unexpected gift for x-mas. I got the Gateway EC1433u Cherry Red(the black ones were all sold out). I was originally going to get the Asus Netbook, but I really couldn't figure out which one I wanted. I picked out the gateway because it had the ability to do hd video, had an hdmi as well as an optical out. As of now I love this little thing, the screen has the larger 11.6" screen for netbooks although they are starting to come out with the 12" ones now(with the ion gpu). Also came with Windows 7 x64 home premium which is nice, although with the wmp always running the sharing service in the background is a bit taxing sometimes. The netbook is really quick and responsive, apps open at a decent speed with the 1.3ghz Intel Celeron has about on average 4.5-5 hours of battery life for me so far. Its prob a little slower than the atom processors due to the 300mhz and the lack of hyperthreading. This netbook is also missing bluetooth which I am hoping can be installed internally a little later as they have the enable disable switch on the front of the netbook.  All in all I think the netbook does pretty well for the size and speed especially at the price($399). The older brother of this netbook which is S529 has a dual core 1.3ghz processor and 3gb of ram.

But as the price limit was $400 when I was originally looking at netbooks and when I was asked to look these up for my girlfriends co-worker I was looking for the best bang for the buck which was this one at the time. But with the netbook specs changing again its only a matter of time when this netbook gets left in the dust.

As of now I love this little thing, the screen has the larger 11.6" screen for netbooks although they are starting to come out with the 12" ones now(with the ion gpu). Also came with Windows 7 x64 home premium which is nice, although with the wmp always running the sharing service in the background is a bit taxing sometimes. The netbook is really quick and responsive, apps open at a decent speed with the 1.3ghz Intel Celeron has about on average 4.5-5 hours of battery life for me so far. Its prob a little slower than the atom processors due to the 300mhz and the lack of hyperthreading. This netbook is also missing bluetooth which I am hoping can be installed internally a little later as they have the enable disable switch on the front of the netbook.  All in all I think the netbook does pretty well for the size and speed especially at the price($399). The older brother of this netbook which is S529 has a dual core 1.3ghz processor and 3gb of ram.

But as the price limit was $400 when I was originally looking at netbooks and when I was asked to look these up for my girlfriends co-worker I was looking for the best bang for the buck which was this one at the time. But with the netbook specs changing again its only a matter of time when this netbook gets left in the dust.

My First Netbook

I was originally going to get the Asus Netbook, but I really couldn't figure out which one I wanted. I picked out the gateway because it had the ability to do hd video, had an hdmi as well as an optical out. Well I thought about it for a while listening to most of the tracks and watching a lot of gameplay videos and I finally decided to add another plastic instrument to my collection. Currently I have a GH3 guitar, RB1 guitar/drum/mic, and Rb2 guitar/drum(with cymbals)/mic. The game is actually really good most of the mixes are great some are a bit on the annoying side... like jackson 5 vs third eye blind. Now I wouldn't say playing this game will turn you into a DJ nor will it help you DJ better. This is just a game... just like how playing plastic guitar wont let you shred like [insert favorite guitarist here]. I currently can only play it up to hard but I get a lot of misses. I had to stop playing because I got complaints from my girlfriend that she keeps getting songs stuck in her head. Considering these are mixes you can't really sing along to them unless you A: either have the game or B: have the soundtrack. So I decided to take a break from it I was able to clear all the songs on medium on two days(which shows how much I was playing it when I bought it).

Now the controller is well built the platter feels smooth the crossfader kind of feels like something off of a cheap radio shack mixer that I used to own. The "hidden" control panel is great, although I would of had the headset jack on the front side of slider portion of the controller, this way the cords would be out of the way. I do love the fact that you can change the controller up completely for left's and the fact that you can move the buttons to either side of the platter. One thing I am wondering is if they will ever make the game where you had two platters one for the blue and one of the green stream to give you a more realistic DJ experience.

Now if your a fan of rhythm/music games and like listening to mixes then this is a must have game. You may want to actually try the game out at your local game/electronics store or at a friends house. I have friends that love the game but just can't handle the crossfader, and they end up just completely screwing up. Now if you have a friend that is fairly good at the game(can handle hard) you can get about 250 points by playing the tutorials, and 2 setlists(on hard). The first setlist would be the one right after the tutorial and the second would be the Grandmaster Flash set(if you can unlock it that fast you may have to play another just to get more stars). You will also need to create a dj/guitar setlist with one song in order to get the 2 guitar achievements. Also make sure you have a mic connected not a headset and have someone talk into it while your playing.

New Keyboard….

Well I have been using the Logitech G15 keyboard since it was released... the lcd screen and all the extra macro buttons were great. But now that I don't game as much on my PC as I use to I decided to get a smaller keyboard to free up some of my desk space.  I ended up getting the Logitech S520 its a keyboard mouse combo. I really didn't need a new mouse since my MX 518 has been working really well for me but since this new set is all wireless I thought I would give it a shot.

The Keyboard
This keyboard is really need the keys kinda feel like a laptop. Which isn't too bad but since I have been using such a large keyboard this whole time I need to get used to the button travel on the keys. The volume button and the media keys are placed in a sort of a weird place compared to other keyboards with volume and multimedia keys but have it on the lower edge of the keyboard is pretty nice. The wrist pad area is a bit lame as its just a molded plastic so but it is fairly comfortable. The  f1-12 keys have an fn modifier like a laptop which can be customized using the setpoint software. There is also a calculator key which opens the calculator but that can be changed as well. There are also zoom buttons on the lower portion of the keyboard  I haven't really used them yet as I don't have any need to zoom into anything when I view websites I also haven't really done anything that required zooming.

All in all the keyboard is excelent it looks nice the size is good, the extra buttons are well hidden and flows really well along with the battery meter.

This mouse is a pretty big step back from the MX518 that I am used to. It smaller, the feet suck and there isn't any dedicated back forward buttons that have gotten used to. I did however changed the left and right scroll to act as a back and forward button for when I am browsing, and so far that has worked out pretty good. The feet issue I fixed but cutting a mirrored screen protector I took off of my Nokia E71x(it was too hard to see in sunlight) and using double sided tape to stick it to the bottom of the mouse. As of right now it slides really well, almost as well as using mouse skates on my MX 518.  I am actually debating if I should stick with this mouse of go back to my MX518, having it being a wireless mouse is really nice.

The Verdict
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice wireless keyboard mouse combo under $100. The mouse is a pretty big negative but with a little creative thinking my biggest issue got resolved. The other problem I have with this keyboard and mouse set is the fact that it doesn't use the new universal logitech receiver. It uses the one that sits on your desk and has the num and caps lock lights on it. This isn't really a problem at the moment but if I wanted to get a different/better mouse then I would have to use another usb port. So besides those two issues/problems this is a pretty good combo.

You can buy a mirrored screen protector on ebay for about $1-$5 shipped. I am sure you might be able to use something else or even a mouse pad(I am just using the mouse directly on my desk(I was using a plastic gaming mouse pad with my MX518 which is what I was comparing the new mouse to)). Both the keyboard and mouse uses two AA batteries, and are suppose to last almost a whole year, I cannot confirm this at the moment and I am not sure how fast rechargeable batteries will last. The setpoint software also shows an on screen display when you change the volume or use any of the special fn keys

Remove Demo Games and Apps

Please make sure you use a micro sd card that you can format after doing this.
Modo is not included in newer version of HelloOX2  revised instructions coming soon in the mean time use the trial of xplore

1.  Install x-plore, from here http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=xplore or you can use Modo if you installed HelloOX2(skip to step 3 if using Modo)

2. Than after you install x-plore, run it and go to menu->tools->configuration and select the check box next to everything that says “Show”, including system applications found towards the bottom of the list.

3. Than just go Back and you should see Z: disk. Open it go to system->data->midp2->preinstall and there you will find most of the items in the Games & Apps folder. Here is a complete list of the ones you will find and what application they apply to:

5. After you installed all of them to your memory card, just pop the memory card to your pc or other phone and format it.

Vola! they are gone.

This was found on NokiaExperts.com, I personally removed everything.
I added the instructions for Modo(its what I used after I had to format the phone when Nokia Messaging added blank spaces in my messaging screen)
There are some icons that cannot be removed, those you just have to push down to the bottom of the menu so you can't see them. You will need to make a few folders for this to happen.

Boarderlands

Well I bought Borderlands and the game is well..... AWESOME!!!! Its like they got fallout3 and made it 1st person only, added a "Bazillion" Guns, vehicles, and made the co-op seamless.  Now for the wish they had part.... Customizable Characters(not just color parts), Vehicles that don't get stuck so easily, an easier way to compare guns while in shops.

I have been playing co-op with my girlfriend and its been going good.. I have also been playing solo on a different character which is behind my co-op character so I am always playing catchup with it... Playing co-op is a litter easier than playing solo so you have someone to draw the enemy fire away from you or you have someone to pick you up when you go down. I haven't done any 4 player co-op but I am sure that would be a blast..

After playing this game I hope fable3 will have the co-op set up similar to this where you can go to any point on the map until someone zones to the next map. As the co-op for fable2 was horrid.

So if your thinking of getting Borderlands you should ask your self this.
Do I like FPS games?
Do I like doing quests in game like fallout3 and mmorpgs?
If you answered yes to both questions then the game is for you... If you answered no to both then you prob wont like it too much and if your answer was split then its a toss up because if you can't play FPS games because you get motion sickness or if you just suck then you will have a hard time.. and if you hate doing quests/favors for people then you will hate doing it for this game too.

Simplify the Process
To make it a little easier put all your ringtones in one folder, you can have them in sub-folders. Also make sure all your music files are not in that folder.
I have my ringtones in my Sounds folder and Music in Music(WMP default folder)

How To
Start Y-Browser once you get it installed.
Navigate to your ringtone folder(E:\Sounds). Don't open it just highlight.
Click Options then Attributes
Set System to Yes and Save.
Open your Music Player(you can leave Y-Browser open).
Refresh your library you should get all the Music on your phone minus the ringtones.
Go back to Y-Browser, Click Options then Attributes for your Ringtone folder again.
Set System to No and Save.
Close Y-Browser and your done.

Caution
It has been said that on some phones you cannot change the folder back to a non-system folder.
I personally have not had this problem. So you may want to use this on a new folder within the Sounds folder just to be safe.

Other Notes
You will have to do this every time you want to refresh your library.
Normally you should be able to leave your ringtone folder as a system folder but for some reason the(my) Nokia E71x will not see it when selecting a ringtone. Well it will just not like it is suppose to.

Customize Calendar, Contacts and Mail Buttons

Please take caution when using MagicKey, you do not want to remap a key that is vital to your phone operation.

Programs

MagicKey Instructions
Open MagicKey.
Press right and go to the KeyMap List.
Open the Default KeyMap
Create the following pairs.

• 224 > 16 (Application17->Application1B) [Calendar Key]
• 225 > 17 (Application18-> Application1C) [Contacts Key]
• 226 >167 (Application19->Application1D) [Mail Key]

Close MagicKey

Now those keys should not do anything.

Tracker Instructions
Open Tracker
Add a new Application
Click Hotkey and press one of the three keys(you can use a long press)
Now press done.

Now you should be able to open different programs with those keys.

Other Notes
Now the current version of Tracker(1.03) does not allow you to open 2 different programs with one button using short and long presses. I was told by smartphoneware customer support that this feature might be added to a future release. I currently have the Calendar and Contacts Keys to activate on long presses, but for some reason Tracker will open the apps even when you just hit the button. I am pretty sure it is some bug, and hopfully it wil be fixed in the next release.

If for some reason your keys are not changed you may have left MagicKey open. Once MagicKey is closed you keys will be remapped.

Why Tracker?
The only reason I am using Tracker to do this is because I have not been able to find a hotkey app that will allow me to use single button to open apps. It also supports long and short presses. If anyone knows of any alternatives please let me know, I have already tried Cute Keys and Phone Shortcuts but they don't work in this case.

Well since the Nokia E71x has been stripped of some of the cool functions that  the Nokia E71 has. Here are a few apps that will help you get some of it back.

Home/Standby Screens
Epocware Handy Shell ($19.95) - This will give you an alternate standby screen. You can still access the normal standby screen, with a push of a button. When setting it up I disabled all Active Pages options other than today. I set the Red key cycle to Shell-Standby, set the Menu key cycle to Menu only, and  the Red key action to Send to background. Also setting the Right selection key to Menu in Config.>General>Personalization>Idle screen mode>Shortcuts well keep the right selection key consistent between the two screens.
There are other apps you can get that works well with Handy Shell like Handy Alarm, Handy Calendar, and Handy Weather

Calendars
Epocware Handy Calendar ($29.95) - This is an awesome calendar program. This will display the calendar like the Nokia E71 but it also offers a few other view options. Its a little pricey but worth it if you use the calendar a lot. It is also integrated into Handy Shell so when you open an upcoming event Handy Calendar will open instead of the built in calendar.

What Phone to Get?

Please note that all the prices and references are to AT&T as that is the carrier that I use and the E71x is an AT&T phone. I know the E71 is a unlocked phone but it does not support the tmobile 3G network. So unless your in a wifi hotspot you will have slow internet with tmobile.

E71x or E71 Which to buy?
Now this is a question I see come up in a few forums off and on. I personally would get the E71 if I had the initial $300 to buy it. The features that you get with the E71 is really awesome, and you only have to pay $15 for the same internet. The only draw back that I see is that you might not be able to access the AT&T MediaMall but you get the OVI store. You also might not be able to use CV(Cellular Video) either, but with youtube and all the other video sites you can access with a browser like skyfire it seems really minor. So I say if you have the money buy the E71 the features you get with it and if you use the phone for more than 2 years you get you end up paying less than a person that bought the E71x. You also have better options for headsets, as you can get the cool right angled 3.5mm headset adapter on ebay instead of the strange corded one.

Differences between the E71x and E71.
For those that don't know the Nokia E71x is the AT&T branded version of the Nokia E71. As its branded by AT&T there are some apps that were installed by AT&T which can not be removed through normal processes. There is also a OS difference between the two as well the E71x uses Symbian OS6.3 Feature Pack 2, The E71 uses Symbian OS6.3 Feature Pack 1. There are also a lot of features that were removed from the E71x like the Switchable/Customizable standby screen, Customizable Calendar Contact Mail buttons with the option of using long and short presses, Calendar with tasklist, Turn on/off 3G, and a few other minor things. Also with the E71x you have to get the PDA internet plan that runs $30 with the E71 you can get the media net plan that is only $15, $10 if you have unlimited family texting. The biggest advantage the E71x has over the E71 is the fact that you can get it for free with a 2 year contract, if you do a little research. The only draw back is over the course of the two years the E71 would have paid for its self with just the difference between the internet prices[24(months) x$15(internet difference)=$360].

E71(x) or (phone of choice) Which to buy?
This is another question that comes up in many forums, as for which phone to buy it really comes down to the features you want. Now I have always been a fan of smart phones ever since I bought the Nokia 6670. I hate to say but this is my 2nd smart phone(it would be my 3rd but I gave my Nokia 5800xm to my girlfriend). A few reasons to get a smart phone is because it allows you do to a lot more with the phone, there are more apps that can add functionality to the phone. Some examples like have you phone act like an answering machine instead of having your calls go to voicemail, Record phone calls in progress with or without the beep, choice of music player instead of using the built in one, etc. The best way to put it is a smart phone is like a mini computer. I know some people don't need all those features so a feature phone would be fine for them considering some of the new feature phones are starting to act and feel like smart phones. Regardless of reviews someone is always going to say that this phone will be better than that phone. It is always best to play with the phone that you are going to use, and when you play with it at the store try and do everything you would normally do with your phone. I also being a customer of AT&T everyone is bragging about their iphone, now the iphone is a pretty nice and fancy phone. Especially once the phone has been jailbroken, but you also have to understand with the iphone is everything happens on that touch screen. So if you like the feel of pushing buttons you are going to be annoyed with the iphone. I also heard you can't wear gloves when using the iphone so that is another bad point if your in a colder climate. One other bad thing is you can't multi-task on the iphone, its like getting this awesome computer that will only let you open one program at a time. That doesn't seem very practical, on my phone I normally have a few apps open at time which is really nice and easy to switch between. So as for the which phone to get its really up to the user. One phone brand I do recommend is a Sony Ericsson, the main reason for that is because you can unbrand the phone which installs the generic firmware into the phone which unlocks the phone to its full potential. Like push mail(yes regular push mail on a feature phone), gps access to other apps(google maps, amaze), and a few settings that get locked away by AT&T. The best thing to do when looking for a phone is to do research, not just on the AT&T website but from people out in the community. So when looking for a phone, check reviews(written and video), make a list of phones you want, play with all the phones, narrow your choices down and go read more reviews.

This page will list a few tricks in customizing your Nokia E71x to get it to function like the Nokia E71, or to even just expand the functionality of the phone.
Some of these tips have been taken from other sites some have been found by me.

Here are a few things you might need before starting.
A certificate so you can sign apps, you can get a certificate from OPDA.
You can get a sis signing tool from here.
Once you get your certificate and the signing tool you can either sign all the unsigned apps manually or download HelloOX2.
Please note you can skip getting the certificate and the signing tool and just get HelloOX2 if you pay them $5 to sign the app for you.
You will need to sign HelloOX2 before you install it unless they have signed it for you.
Once you install HelloOX2 you will be able to install unsigned apps to your phone.

I am not responsible for any damages or loss of data to your phone.
I will not offer any support for getting certificates or using the signing tool.
Before installing HelloOX2 make sure that it will work on your firmware, this is a phone hack and may break your phone.

Please take caution when using MagicKey, you do not want to remap a key that is vital to your phone operation.

MagicKey Instructions
Open MagicKey.
Press right and go to the KeyMap List.
Open the Default KeyMap
Create the following pairs.

• 224 > 16 (Application17->Application1B) [Calendar Key]
• 225 > 17 (Application18-> Application1C) [Contacts Key]
• 226 >167 (Application19->Application1D) [Mail Key]

Close MagicKey

Now those keys should not do anything.

Tracker Instructions
Open Tracker
Add a new Application
Click Hotkey and press one of the three keys(you can use a long press)
Now press done.

Now you should be able to open different programs with those keys.

Other Notes
Now the current version of Tracker(1.03) does not allow you to open 2 different programs with one button using short and long presses. I was told by smartphoneware customer support that this feature might be added to a future release. I currently have the Calendar and Contacts Keys to activate on long presses, so I don't end up opening programs up when I am playing games.

If for some reason your keys are not changed you may have left MagicKey open. Once MagicKey is closed you keys will be remapped.

Now go back to the App List

Now if done correctly when the camera is open you should be able to zoom in and out using the volume keys and the voice command key should act as a shutter.

It will say CameraShutter2.
Now press done.

Now when the Voice Command Key is press the camera will open, and since MagicKey remaps the keys it will now act like a dedicated camera key.

Problems with doing this
Now if you do this you will lose the Voice Command function on that key, So you  can opt to skip the tracker portion in order to keep the voice command.
You can also access the voice command by holding down the right selection key but it doesn't work on all screens.
You will also not be able to use the Voice Command while the camera is open due to MagicKey remaping the keys.

Other Notes
It is possible to remap the voice command key to a different key. So if you don't use the calendar key you can have the calendar key act as the voice command key. You just have to remap the Voice Command Key to an unused key in  MagicKey under the default keymap and set the Calendar as the Voice Command Key.
I believe the number for the Voice Command Key is 227, you can also search for it in the list in MagicKey.
